Families Concerned About Future of Program for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students at Oakdale Elementary

TOLEDO, Ohio-Some parents in Toledo Public Schools are concerned about the potential discontinuation of the deaf and hard-of-hearing program at Oakdale Elementary next year. They’ve received calls from TPS staff indicating this change, leaving parents like Shina Ward worried about their children’s education.

Ward’s daughter, who is in fourth grade, has been at Oakdale since preschool. She’s been informed that her daughter could stay at Oakdale with provided transportation, or be placed in a special needs class. Another parent, Jamie Kraus, emphasized the positive learning environment at Oakdale, particularly beneficial for children with hearing impairments. Both parents praise the school and its teachers, expressing concerns about replicating the experience elsewhere. Despite uncertainties, Ward plans to enroll her daughter at Oakdale for the upcoming year.
