‘It Will be Fine’: CPS Superintendent Talks Public Busing, Phone Lockups as Kids Return to Class

CINCINNATI, Ohio-Cincinnati Public Schools Interim Superintendent Shauna Murphy, who stepped into her role after the resignation of former Superintendent Iranetta Wright, is confident about the upcoming academic year. Murphy’s appointment followed a historic vote of no confidence from all CPS unions, largely due to a significant budget shortfall. Since her appointment, the deficit has been reduced from $90 million to $31.6 million. Murphy, who is part of a special budget task force, acknowledged the challenge of closing such a large gap, noting that the shortfall was worsened by the expiration of pandemic relief funds. Measures like eliminating yellow bus service for many middle school students have helped mitigate the deficit.
