SPRINGFIELD, Ohio-Springfield Local Schools, despite summer break, continues to focus on improving safety measures in collaboration with the police chief and township trustees. A critical issue addressed was the lack of communication for school resource officers (SROs), highlighted by dead zones in school buildings.
This issue persisted for decades until a $163,000 federal school safety grant enabled the purchase of new radios and bi-directional amplifiers. These upgrades have enhanced emergency response capabilities, facilitating immediate communication between officers and dispatch, which proved beneficial during recent incidents, including a student’s medical emergency. Additionally, the school applied additional grant funds to install protective film on glass windows and doors to prevent shattering during emergencies.
