Springboro Schools Upset State Won’t Correct Report Card Errors

April 12th, 2024-SPRINGBORO, Ohio-Springboro school district officials are disputing errors in their state report card, particularly in the early literacy component. Despite receiving an overall five-star rating, they argue that the data inaccurately represents their kindergarten students’ progress. The district claims that the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) failed to correct the errors, which were initially reported in September 2023.

ODEW insists that districts are responsible for submitting accurate data and appealing any discrepancies within the designated timeframe. Springboro officials assert that ODEW’s failure to address the errors promptly has led to incorrect baseline data, affecting future report cards. They emphasize their investment in early literacy and express pride in their educators’ efforts. ODEW defends its process, stating that districts self-report data and have opportunities to appeal.

However, they acknowledge the existence of a watermark on Springboro’s report card indicating data errors. State officials, including appointed Board of Education member Walt Davis, are working with district officials to resolve the issue and improve the reporting process. Davis criticizes the reliance on watermarks as a temporary fix and suggests the need for a more effective mechanism to correct inaccuracies promptly.
