COLUMBUS, Ohio-Governor Mike DeWine unveiled a model policy aimed at reducing student cellphone use during school hours in Ohio. The policy, designed to enhance academic engagement and social interaction, prohibits cellphone use on school premises during learning time, requiring students to store their devices securely.
Violations may incur disciplinary actions outlined in the policy, including verbal warnings, confiscation of phones, or parental involvement. Exceptions apply for students with Individual Education Programs (IEPs) or health monitoring needs. Mandated by HB 250, effective January 1, 2025, all Ohio schools must adopt cellphone policies by July 2025, either by implementing the model policy or devising their own in accordance with HB 250.
