CMSD School Board Votes to Put a Levy on the Ballot in November

CLEVELAND, Ohio-The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) board voted unanimously to present a levy to residents for approval in the upcoming November ballot. This levy aims to address ongoing financial challenges exacerbated by the expiration of federal pandemic relief funding. If passed, the levy would increase annual property taxes for Cleveland residents, amounting to approximately $300 for every $100,000 in property value.

The 10-year, $8.6 million levy is projected to cost the average Clevelander $4.62 per week. Additionally, the district seeks $295 million in bonds for school maintenance, which would not impact taxpayers directly. Despite recent budget cuts and adjustments, the district anticipates a $110 million deficit by 2027. Cleveland Schools CEO Dr. Warren Morgan emphasizes the district’s commitment to equity, excellence, and access, but acknowledges the need for financial support to maintain this goal.
