Another Idaho School District Moves to a Four-Day Week Next Year. Here’s Why

IDAHO, Ohio-The Nampa School District in Idaho has decided to transition to a four-day school week starting next academic year, with the board voting 3-2 in favor of the change. The decision was made despite concerns about the impact on families relying on schools for food, childcare, and resources. Superintendent Gregg Russell emphasized the potential benefits for retaining qualified teachers, providing longer class periods, and possibly increasing attendance.

The move follows previous changes, including school closures due to declining enrollment and facility issues, as well as a switch to a trimester class schedule for high school students. The decision also coincides with legislative requirements regarding instructional time and funding for school facilities. While some trustees expressed reservations about the transition, citing concerns about longer school days and access to food and childcare, others emphasized the potential benefits for student success and teacher preparation.
