‘Accountability and transparency’: State FOP Calling on Ohio Supreme Court to Change Rules for Juvenile Court

CINCINNATI, Ohio-The Ohio Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) has urged the Supreme Court of Ohio to revise certain rules regarding juvenile court procedures, citing concerns about public safety and transparency. Specifically, they addressed Ohio Juvenile Rule 9, also known as the “unofficial docket,” which emphasizes diversion programs over formal court action.

FOP President Gary Wolske expressed apprehensions about the lack of clear standards, limited resources, and insufficient oversight in diversion programs, highlighting cases where serious offenses are diverted without adequate accountability. The letter to Chief Justice Sharon Kennedy also referenced data from Hamilton County, particularly regarding the handling of resisting arrest charges in the unofficial docket. Additionally, concerns were raised about the potential risks posed by lenient court policies, including cases of violence involving juveniles. The Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office and State Representative Cindy Abrams echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for accountability and safety in addressing juvenile crime.
