Elementary School Market Gives Children a Taste of Real-World Business

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Ecole Kenwood Elementary School in Columbus hosts an annual “market day” where students create and sell goods and services to their peers, families, and the community. This project, now in its fourth year, aims to teach students about economics, trade, and civic engagement within a free-market system.

Students learn about budgeting, debt, and responsibility by managing their own “Kenwood cash” to pay for materials and fines. The market also serves as a fundraiser for the school, providing a hands-on learning experience with real-world implications.
