TOLEDO, Ohio-Reynolds Elementary in Toledo is implementing incentive programs to improve attendance rates, as chronic absenteeism was high during the 2022-23 school year. Principal Tiffany Dent announced rewards such as catered lunches and skating trips for classes with the best attendance.
Toledo Public Schools (TPS) faces challenges typical of urban districts, including housing and food insecurities, contributing to absenteeism. TPS has seen a 10% decrease in absenteeism since the 2021-22 school year through various efforts, including working with the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center. A new bill in the Ohio Statehouse proposes paying students up to $500 a year for good attendance, but TPS has not yet discussed applying for the program.
