Akron Teachers’ Union Sends Cease and Desist Letter Accusing APS of Union Busting

AKRON, Ohio-The Akron Education Association has accused Akron Public Schools of undermining the union by removing union members from administrative positions and replacing them with non-union personnel in nearly identical roles. Attorney Don Malarcik, representing the union, alleges this constitutes union busting. In response, the school district denies these claims, stating they acted within legal bounds and the collective bargaining agreement. The dispute arose following the district’s decision to eliminate teaching positions and reassign staff, citing budgetary constraints. Malarcik contends that new non-union positions are essentially the same jobs that were eliminated, which he argues violates labor practices. He has threatened to file a grievance and an unfair labor practice complaint if the district persists with its actions.
