Alexander Local Schools Predicts Layoffs and New Fees for Students if its Operating Levy Fails Again

ALBANY, Ohio-The operating levy for Alexander Local Schools is a recurring issue, having failed five times before narrowly passing in 2019. Now, facing another ballot in March, the levy’s renewal is crucial for the district, constituting 11% of its budget. However, the district is grappling with financial challenges exacerbated by rising costs and an unfavorable state funding formula.

Superintendent William Hampton warns of potential layoffs, larger class sizes, and the loss of specialized courses if the levy fails. The district may also introduce student fees for activities and reduce services like free breakfasts. Despite the district’s high income levels, its inability to collect taxes from residents poses a significant obstacle. The levy’s repeated failures remain a perplexing issue, contrasting with the typical passage of school levies in the region.
