CATCH 22: Driving Dilemma for Thousands of Ohio Parents With Child Support Debt

CLEVELAND, Ohio-For over a year, News 5 Investigators and the Marshall Project Cleveland have highlighted the cycle of debt resulting from license suspensions affecting hundreds of thousands of Ohio drivers, mostly due to unpaid fines. Although state lawmakers have taken steps to alleviate barriers, many parents in Ohio, facing license suspension for unpaid child support, still struggle.

Renee Ditchburn, while not directly affected, understands the risk, grappling with guilt and financial strain over her inability to pay child support and connect with her son. Various reasons, including missed court appearances and clerical errors, can lead to license suspension, exacerbating financial burdens. Cuyahoga County ranks highest in license suspensions, with child support being a significant cause, while Lorain County’s suspension rates suggest economic challenges. The cycle persists, with concerns raised about the punitive nature of license suspensions for non-driving-related debts, hindering individuals’ ability to earn and pay off debts.
