COLUMBUS, Ohio-As students return to school, many parents may not be aware of the CDC’s updated lice policies. The new guidelines allow students with head lice to stay in school for the day and return the next morning after receiving treatment, rather than being sent home early. The CDC, along with the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses, now advises against strict “no-nit” policies, noting that nits are unlikely to cause transmission once lice are treated. Despite these changes, a recent Nix survey found that many parents remain unaware of the new rules, with some even admitting to sending children to school with lice or keeping infestations secret.
