CLEVELAND, Ohio-The teachers’ union for the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District has filed a grievance against the district due to unsafe heat conditions in five of their 11 school buildings, which lack air conditioning. With temperatures reaching up to 100 degrees in classrooms, students and staff experienced health issues such as headaches, nausea, and vomiting. The union argues that holding classes under these conditions hindered effective learning and violated their contract which prioritizes the well-being of students and teachers. They are calling for the district to close schools when the heat index exceeds 90 degrees. The superintendent responded by stating that precautions, including providing water, were taken, though teachers felt these measures were insufficient.
