AKRON, Ohio-Don Zesiger, the Director of Safety and Security at Akron Public Schools, has resigned from his position, effective June 28. He will continue to work with the district as a police liaison officer for events. Zesiger was hired by former superintendent Christine Fowler Mack in 2022 for the newly created director position.
He previously served as the chief of police in Tallmadge and worked in security roles for Akron Children’s Hospital, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, and Akron Police. During his tenure, Zesiger implemented various safety measures in response to concerns raised by teachers about student behavior and safety in schools. He cited a desire for more flexibility to spend time with his family as the reason for his resignation. The district plans to fill the director’s role, which is a senior staff-level position.
