GAHANNA, Ohio-Sharon Montgomery of Gahanna, Ohio, experienced the devastating consequences of distracted driving nearly 24 years ago when she and her husband were involved in a crash caused by a driver on a cellphone. Her husband passed away, and she was seriously injured.
Since then, Montgomery has been advocating for stronger laws and protections against distracted driving. Ohio has implemented new laws allowing law enforcement to pull over drivers for phone use as a primary offense. Gahanna has taken additional steps, passing an ordinance with fines and community service for texting while driving offenses. The city is also raising awareness through Distracted Driving Awareness Month, offering free stickers and urging drivers to join their campaign against distracted driving.
