Hamilton County Schools Won’t Endorse Armed Teachers After Bill Passes

HAMILTON Ohio-Hamilton County Schools will not permit teachers or faculty to carry handguns, despite a new Tennessee bill allowing it under certain conditions. Superintendent Justin Robertson stated that given the community’s ability to provide armed personnel in every building, he doesn’t recommend arming any other individuals in Hamilton County schools.

The school resource program, run by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, ensures every campus has a school resource deputy or security officer. The state legislation requires trained teachers to carry a handgun, undergo background checks, mental health clearance, and complete 40 hours of basic school policing training.

However, the bill faced opposition from gun-reform advocates, with concerns about safety and effectiveness. National data from the Giffords Law Center shows around half of U.S. states allow teachers to carry guns, with varying policies.
