‘It’s not to Cause an Alarm, But it’s not to Defuse the Situation Either’: Rise in Missing Children Reports

CLEVELAND, Ohio-A recent study reveals a concerning rise in missing children cases across Ohio in 2023, with Northeast Ohio particularly affected. Linda Summers, whose granddaughter Ashley Summers went missing in 2007 at age 14, reflects on the enduring pain of her absence. President of Cleveland Missing, John Majoy, notes the persistent issue of missing children in the region, with approximately 400 missing persons at any given time.

The study by Missing Children Clearinghouses reports 17,405 missing children in Ohio in 2023, up from 15,555 in 2022. Though alarming, Majoy sees increased reporting as a positive step. Active cases like Keshaun Williams’ underscore families’ ongoing anguish and hope for resolution. Cuyahoga and Franklin counties had the highest number of reports, though 98% of missing children were safely recovered by year-end, per the study.
