CLEVELAND, Ohio-Jose Gonzalez, the deputy chief of student services for Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), emphasizes the importance of engaging with students through story time. Originally from Puerto Rico, he faced language barriers upon moving to Cleveland but found support from CMSD teachers that helped him become fluent in English. His early challenges inspired him to enter education, especially after his mother’s illness forced him to work at a young age. Gonzalez rose through the ranks from teaching assistant to principal of the district’s first dual-language school. After 26 years at CMSD, he remains passionate about helping students, believing that potential exists in every child. He encourages students to seize opportunities and never give up, reflecting on his own journey as a testament to what can be achieved with determination.
