New Bill Proposes Panic Buttons for Ohio’s Schools

CANAL WINCHESTER, Ohio-Ohio state senator Michele Reynolds announced the filing of new school safety legislation, Alyssa’s Law, at Canal Winchester High School. This bill, or Senate Bill 313, mandates that teachers and staff wear emergency alert devices equipped with panic buttons to alert first responders and law enforcement in emergencies. Pressing the button multiple times can indicate different types of emergencies, such as a medical crisis or an active shooter situation. The law is named after Alyssa Alhadeff, a victim of the Parkland school shooting, and aims to enhance school safety by empowering staff to quickly signal for help. The devices also feature GPS technology to help law enforcement respond more effectively. The legislation includes $25 million for training staff and implementing the technology across Ohio schools. Supporters believe this initiative will save lives by improving emergency response times.
