New Device Could Identify Which Babies Will Struggle With Breastfeeding

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Researchers at UC San Diego have developed a novel method to precisely measure babies’ suckling abilities using a digital vacuum sensor connected to a pacifier. This system allows real-time measurement of various sucking parameters, aiding in the detection of conditions like ankyloglossia (tongue-tie), which affects breastfeeding.

The study analyzed data from 91 babies, revealing insights into sucking force and the effectiveness of frenotomy surgery. The aim is to provide clinicians with concrete data to diagnose breastfeeding difficulties accurately and intervene promptly. While breastfeeding offers significant benefits, its duration tends to decrease over time, highlighting the importance of early intervention. The research has been well-received by experts, although they note that non-nutritive suckling alone may not fully assess breastfeeding effectiveness.
