MAHONING, Ohio-The Ohio Poison Center is witnessing a concerning surge in children unintentionally consuming adult products containing THC and marijuana. Incidents in the Mahoning Valley have led to hospitalizations and legal actions against parents. Richard Tvaroch from Mahoning County Children’s Services notes an increase in accidents due to inappropriate storage and products resembling common candies.
Children experiencing THC ingestion may display intensified symptoms, including intoxication, anxiety, elevated heart rate, and in rare cases, seizures. Prompt action, such as contacting poison control or seeking emergency medical care, is crucial. The OPC reports a rise in THC-related incidents among children under 5, with a significant portion requiring emergency room visits and even intensive care. With potential legislative changes, there’s apprehension that such accidents could become more prevalent as THC and cannabis availability increases.
