Recalled Infant Formula Tests Positive for Bacteria that can Lead to Motor Impairments, Death

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Dairy Manufacturers Inc. issued a voluntary recall for its Crecelac and Famalac infant formulas due to noncompliance with FDA registration requirements on May 24. However, an update from the FDA now reveals that the Crecelac Infant 0-12 month formula with an August 2025 expiration date has tested positive for Cronobacter spp., a potentially deadly bacterium. Cronobacter infections, although rare, are most severe in infants under 2 months old, often leading to meningitis or bloodstream infections with a high mortality rate.

Complications can include brain abscesses, developmental delays, and motor impairments, highlighting the seriousness of the issue. Symptoms in infants may include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice, grunting breaths, or abnormal body movements, emphasizing the importance of vigilance among consumers.
