AMichael Russell, a seasoned educator with 25 years of experience, teaches various history courses at Oberlin High School, including African American history, U.S. history, and International Baccalaureate history of the Americas. He also leads a course on race, gender, and oppression in American and world history. Russell, a former Ohio Teacher of the Year, has coached the boys basketball team at Oberlin since 1996.
Reflecting on his education at Wooster, Russell credits the institution for instilling in him a Socratic methodology that emphasizes critical thinking and encourages students to develop their own ideas. He applies this approach in his teaching to empower students in their learning process. He aims to raise awareness about the importance of representation in education, hoping to empower students through their academic journeys.
