School Tax Approval Hits Historically Low Mark in Ohio

April 6th, 2024-COLUMBUS, Ohio-In Ohio’s recent primary election, only six out of 36 school districts seeking tax increases were successful, with voters approving just 40 out of 57 requests to renew existing taxes. This marked historically low numbers for the state. Save Ohio Schools, an Ohio-based nonprofit, attributed the failures to factors such as higher property evaluations, inflation, low voter turnout, and a higher proportion of Republican voters compared to Democrats.

Despite being aware of these challenges, the impact was greater than anticipated. Overall voter turnout was 1.76 million out of 8 million registered voters, with Republican voters outnumbering Democrats. The nonprofit’s analysis revealed that, historically, an average of 35.7% of new school tax requests are passed, while 91.3% of renewals are approved. However, in March, only 16.6% of new tax requests were passed, and 70.2% of renewals were approved. This marks a significant departure from previous trends, indicating a greater challenge in garnering support for school funding measures.
