April 16th, 2024-HOLLAND, Ohio-Springfield High School’s Esports team, established in 2014, has become a leading example of competitive video gaming in the area. Under head coach Sean Abel, the team has evolved into a varsity sport, providing opportunities for students like senior Jackson Sloan, who received an Esports scholarship to Ball State University.
Despite the initial stigma, the team has grown to include diverse members, including female players. With a focus on games like Valorant, the team has achieved regional success and is breaking stereotypes associated with video gaming. Springfield’s Esports program offers a unique opportunity for students to compete, collaborate, and excel, with achievements like a third-place finish in Fortnite at the state level.
