Study shows increase in nicotine pouch ingestions in children

Ingestions of nicotine pouches by young children have surged in recent years, according to a new study from the Center for Injury Research and Policy of the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. According to researchers both at the center and at the Central Ohio Poison Center, there was a 763% increase in the rate of reported nicotine pouch ingestions among children younger than 6 from 2020 to 2023. The pouches were also more likely to be tied to serious medical outcomes or hospital admissions compared to other nicotine products, such as gum/lozenges, e-liquids, powder/granules and tablets/capsules/caplets.
