‘Teachers Are The Backbone’: Kentucky Teachers Leaving Workforce at Alarming Rate

April 16th 2024-CINCINNATI, Ohio-Kentucky is facing a concerning trend of teacher attrition, with a quarter of teachers leaving their jobs in 2023, leaving 13,000 positions vacant. In response, lawmakers have passed House Bill 377, which introduces two new initiatives. One offers student loan forgiveness for new teachers, while the other provides stipends for college students during their student teaching period. These programs aim to alleviate financial burdens and attract more individuals to the teaching profession.

Madeline Del Rio, a prospective teacher, highlights the challenges of student debt and unpaid student teaching periods, expressing hope that these programs will make a significant difference. Representative Kim Banta emphasizes the importance of supporting teachers, stating that the initiatives will offer up to $5,000 in loan forgiveness annually and $5,000 stipends for student teachers. The application process is expected to start on July 1 through the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority.
