ZOARVILLE, Ohio-Tusky Valley School District has introduced therapy dogs Hank and Yikity Yak to provide comfort and support to students. Hank works with 5th-grade teacher Lisa Owen at the elementary school, while Yikity Yak accompanies Superintendent Derek Varansky’s wife Heidi.
The idea for therapy dogs came from discussions with ADAMHS Board Executive Director Natalie Bollon, who observed their positive impact after a tragedy. Senator Al Landis connected the district with the Smucker Foundation to acquire the dogs. Meanwhile, Newcomerstown School District approved a Golden Retriever named Gram as its second facility dog. Gram, handled by Intervention Specialist Brittany Moore, offers comfort to students in various school buildings. Both dogs underwent specialized training and certification to serve in their roles.
