Worthington Schools Continue Religious Release Policy Debate

COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Worthington City School Board recently discussed the constitutionality of its religious release time policy, which allows students to attend religious instruction during school breaks. This follows a similar decision made by the Westerville school board to end such a policy. Supporters of the policy, including LifeWise program advocate Jennifer Jury, argue that it provides parental choice and is not mandatory for students. LifeWise, which offers Bible teachings, has been active in the community, and Jury hopes the board will continue to support the program. However, opponents raised concerns about student safety while off-campus and the potential for recruitment efforts during religious classes. Some, like Jeanne Melvin, worry about the policy blurring the line between church and state.
