You Could get Pulled Over for Not Wearing a Seat Belt in Ohio if New Bill Becomes Law

COLUMBUS, Ohio-A proposed law in Ohio, supported by Governor Mike DeWine, would make not wearing a seat belt a primary offense, allowing police to stop vehicles solely for seat belt violations. Currently, officers must have another reason to stop a vehicle before citing a seat belt violation.

The initiative aims to improve seat belt usage, as Ohio ranks low nationally in this regard. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that primary seat belt laws increase usage and reduce crash deaths. Ohio State Patrol data shows that a significant percentage of crash victims were not wearing seat belts. State Rep. Jon Cross introduced the bill, and a press conference with the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Ohio Department of Public Safety is scheduled for Wednesday.
