YSU Grad, Long-Time Teacher Leaves $2.3M Gift to Establish Scholarship

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio-Bessie Veck, a former teacher in the Youngstown Schools, left a $2.3 million estate gift to Youngstown State University (YSU) upon her death in January at age 96. The gift will establish a scholarship fund managed by the YSU Foundation, providing over $80,000 annually to support students. Eligible recipients include undergraduate and graduate students with a minimum 2.5 GPA, and at least one scholarship each year will go to a student pursuing a career in education. YSU President Bill Johnson expressed gratitude for Veck’s legacy and its impact on future generations. Veck, a Youngstown native, had a long teaching career at Bennett Elementary School and held degrees from Youngstown College and Columbia University.
