Child Care Advocates Praise DeWine’s proposed Vouchers But Say More needs to be Done

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Governor Mike DeWine proposed expanding childcare voucher eligibility during his State of the State speech, suggesting vouchers for families earning up to 200% of the federal poverty level, or about $60,000 annually for a family of four.

Advocates, including Lynanne Gutierrez of Groundwork Ohio, see this as a positive step, though they emphasize the need for more affordable childcare options. At an Ohio Chamber of Commerce event, panelists discussed the challenges of sustainability in childcare, suggesting a shift in how preschool education is funded, akin to K-12 education.

While Republicans in the legislature support expanding childcare access, they express caution about the associated costs. Democrats support the idea but call for addressing childcare providers’ needs as well. Some highlight discrepancies in spending concerns, noting previous allocations for private K-12 education.
