Court: Gov. Mike DeWine Lacked Authority to Remove Teachers’ Pension Board Member

COLUMBUS, Ohio-The 10th District Court of Appeals ruled that Governor Mike DeWine lacked the authority to remove his appointee, Wade Steen, from the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio board and replace him with G. Brent Bishop. The court stated that the law did not explicitly grant the governor the power to remove appointees, thus reinstating Steen.

DeWine’s office indicated that Steen won’t be reappointed when his term expires in September, and they are considering appealing the ruling to the Ohio Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the board oversees $90 billion in investments for 500,000 teachers and retirees, with ongoing disputes over transparency, leadership, staff bonuses, and the suspension of cost-of-living adjustments.
