COLUMBUS, Ohio-In Ohio, several regions have witnessed a concerning surge in sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly syphilis, as per recent data from various health organizations such as Columbus Public Health, the Cleveland Department of Public Health, and Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio.
The Ohio Department of Health reported an 82% increase in syphilis rates from 2016 to 2021, with Columbus seeing cases nearly double between 2019 and 2021. Cleveland has experienced a rapid rise in syphilis cases since 2018. Nationally, syphilis cases have increased by almost 80% over the last five years, prompting the CDC to stress the urgency of addressing STIs as a public health priority.
Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio highlighted the need for financial support, as federal funding for STI programming has remained stagnant despite increased demand. Additionally, concerns have been raised about state legislation, such as House Bill 475, which could impact funding for clinics providing STI testing due to its provisions regarding abortion-related activities.
