State Report Card: 43% of Cincinnati Public Schools Students are Chronically Absent

CINCINNATI, Ohio-Chronic absenteeism is a significant issue for schools in the Tri-State area, with 43.5% of Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) students missing 10% or more of the school year. Former CPS counselor Terri Bolds Wilkinson-Hill attributes this to challenges at home, such as neglect and lack of support. In response, CPS Board President Eve Bolton highlighted the district’s extensive extracurricular programs aimed at increasing engagement, while Interim Superintendent Shauna Murphy emphasized a commitment to improving educational opportunities through a strategic plan. Cincinnati Youth Collaborative is also addressing these out-of-school issues through mentorship and support programs. However, Bolds Wilkinson-Hill stresses the need for greater family engagement to effectively tackle absenteeism.
