Parma Schools Drop 2024 Levy Attempt Amid County Property Reappraisal

PARMA, Ohio-The Parma City School District has decided to drop its plan to place a new operating levy on the November 2024 ballot due to recent increases in property values from Cuyahoga County’s reappraisal. Superintendent Charles Smialek acknowledged residents’ concerns about property tax increases, noting significant valuation jumps, such as a 52% increase for one local employee. Despite these increases, Ohio law limits the impact on school levies, allowing only minor tax adjustments through “inside mills,” which are capped by HB 920. This will generate an additional $3.46 million annually for the district, but this is only about 2% of the district’s $163 million budget.
