Kindergarten Readiness Assessments Point to ‘Alarming’ Trend in Central Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Future Ready Five, a Franklin County nonprofit, has received funding from the city of Columbus to address the kindergarten readiness crisis. Through tests conducted in early childhood centers, they’ve identified significant disparities in readiness levels, particularly among black and mixed-race children compared to white children.

The data highlights weaknesses in areas like vocabulary, oral language, and sentence recognition, crucial for reading success. Future Ready Five aims to bridge these gaps through training sessions for educators and parents. Their goal is to expand the program to 500 students in the fall and eventually cover the entire county by 2030, providing support to every struggling child.
