Parma City School District Looks to Place Emergency Operating Levy on November Ballot

PARMA, Ohio-The Parma City School District plans to introduce a 6.88 millage emergency operating levy in the upcoming fall ballot to address a forecasted budget shortfall. Superintendent Charles Smialek highlights the district’s previous efforts to manage finances, but projects a $17-$18 million deficit by 2027.

Failing to pass new school funding since 2011, the district aims to prevent significant teacher layoffs and program cuts by seeking early approval for the levy. The proposed levy, estimated to generate $15 to $20 million annually, would cost taxpayers around $20.07 more per year for every $100,000 of home value.

Without approval, the district anticipates larger class sizes, reduced course options, and reinstated pay-to-play fees. The Board of Education will vote on the levy proposal in the summer.
