CLEVELAND, Ohio-Ruby Bridges, a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement, shared her powerful personal experiences with students in Cleveland. At just 6 years old in 1960, she was one of the first Black children to integrate an all-white public school in New Orleans. During a Cleveland Public Library event, Bridges described the isolation and emotional challenges she faced, noting that she was completely separated from other students and only found companionship with her teacher, Barbara Henry. Her firsthand account provided students with a deeply personal perspective on the struggles and courage involved in desegregating American schools during the Civil Rights era.
