Franklin County Program Aims to Deter Juveniles Involved in Car Thefts from Becoming Repeat Offenders

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Franklin County Juvenile Court reported a significant increase in juvenile felonies last year, prompting the launch of a new initiative aimed at deterring repeat offenses. The Juvenile Auto Theft Diversion Program, introduced this spring, targets young offenders involved in stolen vehicle cases. The program focuses on early intervention for juveniles aged 9-14 who are often recruited into criminal activities like car theft and gun possession. Participants, who attend sessions through We Are Linden, engage in activities with mentors, create art, and hear from speakers. Successful completion of the program results in dropped charges and $500 restitution paid to victims. The goal is to redirect youth from criminal behavior by fostering positive group affiliations and providing supportive environments.
