April 1st, 2024-DUBLIN, Ohio-Ohio Governor Mike DeWine convened a roundtable in Dublin to discuss the effects of cell phone bans in schools with teachers and administrators who have already implemented such policies. DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted highlighted research indicating that cell phone use not only distracts students from learning but also contributes to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, even suicide in some cases.
They emphasized the addictive nature of smartphones and the need for students to have a break from social media during the school day. School staff who have enforced bans reported positive outcomes, such as increased social interaction among students. DeWine noted that while some states are considering legislation to mandate such bans, Ohio values local control of education and does not currently have a bill in the legislature to enforce a statewide ban.
