April 13th, 2024-CINCINNATI, Ohio-Governor Mike DeWine expressed support for banning cell phone use in Ohio schools during his State of the State address. He emphasized the negative impact phones have on student learning and mental health. Some schools in Ohio have already implemented bans, such as Akron East High School, where students use secured pouches to store their devices during the school day.
Cincinnati Public Schools also restrict phone use during instructional time. Teachers like Ryan Shearer support the idea, highlighting the importance of social interaction during school hours. While there is no statewide restriction currently, Representative Tom Young has introduced a bill to prohibit cell phone use in class, except for medical or instructional purposes. In Kentucky, a similar bill has faced obstacles in passing.
