WESTLAKE, Ohio-Westlake High School’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Drone Technology class has gained approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate drones as part of its curriculum. The approval comes with the designation of FAA-Recognized Identification Areas (FRIAs), allowing students to fly drones within defined geographic zones on school district property.
Westlake High School is the first educational institution in Cuyahoga County to receive this approval. However, the FRIA designation is limited to educational purposes and requires stringent adherence to FAA regulations, including maintaining visual contact with the drone during operation and securing airspace authorization for each flight. Students must also hold a Part 107 license or pass the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) before operating a drone.
