COLUMBUS, Ohio-Misti Norman, owner of Heavenly Kids Center for Learning in Columbus, has faced challenges in the childcare industry, including losing employees and clients during the pandemic and ongoing struggles with staffing. State lawmakers in Ohio have introduced companion bills known as the “Child Care Cred Act” to address the childcare crisis.
The proposed legislation aims to make childcare more affordable and accessible by implementing a cost-sharing model, with families, employers, and the state each covering a third of the cost. The state would allocate $10 million to initiate the program. Lawmakers argue that the current state support for childcare is insufficient, leaving many families unable to afford it.
They emphasize that addressing the childcare crisis could also alleviate workforce shortages, as many parents cite childcare costs as a reason for leaving the workforce. The Ohio Chamber of Commerce supports the bill, acknowledging the impact of childcare on workforce participation. Norman expresses hope that these bills will provide relief for childcare providers and families, noting that childcare has been a longstanding concern for the industry. The bills add to recent legislative efforts at the statehouse, reflecting the heightened attention on childcare issues.
