COLUMBUS, Ohio-Poison hemlock, highly toxic to humans, is currently in its flowering phase and spreading across Ohio, particularly in central and western regions. It grows near bike paths, park edges, and fields, characterized by white roots, purple-spotted hollow stems, and umbrella-shaped clusters of small white flowers.
Contact usually doesn’t cause rashes, but ingestion or absorption through cuts, eyes, or nose can lead to poisoning. Symptoms include sweating, vomiting, dilated pupils, and muscle weakness. Prevention involves safe removal, wearing protective gear, and avoiding cutting or burning the plant. Immediate medical attention is necessary if symptoms occur after contact.
