CINCINNATI, Ohio-Cincinnati Public Schools voted to reduce its $31.6 million budget deficit by cutting more than a dozen assistant principal and manager positions district-wide. The deficit was addressed through various measures, including analyzing spending and reallocating funds. Unexpectedly, transportation costs surged by $6.7 million in a single day, attributed to factors like fuel prices and increased services.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Alesia Smith’s recommendations, which included not re-employing 12 assistant principals and two management positions, were approved despite concerns, notably about the ESL Manager position. Public comments emphasized the importance of ESL support for the growing English learning student population. Although the positions were cut, there’s a possibility of revisiting the ESL manager role in the future. Services for English Language Learners will continue, albeit with potential changes due to the cut ESL manager role.
