Oberlin Elementary Students Taste Variety of Fruits, Vegetables

< 1 min read

OBERLIN, Ohio-Oberlin Elementary School students have started trying a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, including radish coins, celery sticks, and kiwi slices, thanks to the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program introduced in early September. This program, adopted by about 100 elementary schools in Ohio, aims to encourage healthier eating habits among students from schools with a free and reduced lunch population over 50%. According to food services director Matt Phillips, students exposed to this program are more likely to consume fruits and vegetables. The initiative, which began nationally in 2008, features themed days like “Try-It Tuesday” and “Fresh Fruit Friday” for easy distribution of pre-packaged produce. Phillips noted that the program fosters excitement and variety in students’ diets, with more fruits and vegetables to be introduced throughout the month.
