Pre-kindergarten: Akron Teachers Allege Staff Shortages, Safety and Hygiene Concerns

< 1 min read

AKRON, Ohio-At Akron Public Schools, concerns have arisen regarding the new full-day pre-kindergarten program, which began on September 3. Parents and teachers have reported hygiene and safety issues stemming from staffing shortages. For instance, one parent noted their child came home with soiled pants, and teachers expressed that children often struggle to reach soap dispensers, leading to slippery floors. Emails from teachers reveal they are overwhelmed, managing classes of 15 or more without adequate support. Staffing shortages have also led to delays in changing diapers, creating safety hazards and potential hygiene issues. Teachers have raised these concerns to the Akron Education Association, highlighting the need for more paraprofessionals in the classrooms.
